Addis Ababa, June 27, 2024 (FBC) – At the recently concluded 23rd African Athletics Championships, held in Douala, Cameroon, the Ethiopian athletics delegation has achieved remarkable feat, securing five gold medals, four silver medals, and one bronze medal.
The six-day championship, which was held at Stade Omnisport de Japoma and attracted over 2,500 athletes from more than 27 African countries, showcased exceptional athleticism in various disciplines.
Ethiopia, with a team consisting of 32 female and 36 male athletes competing in 19 different athletics events, demonstrated outstanding prowess, ultimately accumulating a total of ten medals, including five gold, four silver, and one bronze.
Ethiopia’s Fantaye Belayneh secured a gold medal in the women’s 5000 meters, while Nibret Melak achieved the same feat in the men’s 10,000 meters. Misgana Wakuma won gold in the men’s 20 km racewalking, Sentayehu Masre took home the gold in the women’s 20 km racewalking, and Saron Berhe won gold in the 1500m women’s event.
Furthermore, Wuberst Aschale earned a silver medal in the 5000m women, Gemchu Dida received a silver medal in the 10,000m men, Alemnat Wale secured a silver medal in the 3000m women’s steeplechase, and Nibret Melak collected another silver medal in the men’s 5000m race.
Moreover, Gela Hambese rounded off the Ethiopian delegation’s achievements a bronze medal in the women’s 10,000, as confirmed by the Ethiopian Athletics Federation.
