Ethiopia and Djibouti reach agreement on completion of Galamo-Moloud road

Addis Ababa, March 23, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia and Djibouti have come to an agreement on the completion of a crucial road that will connect the two countries. The 35-kilometer road between Galamo and Moloud will enable the smooth circulation of vehicles and cargo, enhancing transportation between the two countries.

The agreement was reached during the February visit of Alemu Simie (PhD), Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, and his meeting with the President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh. Alemu Simie is now in Djibouti to oversee the execution of the agreement.

During his visit, Alemu Simie met with Abubakar Omar Hadi, President of the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority, and his team to speed up the construction of the road. The agreement ensures that the Galamo-Moloud 35-km road will be completed within a year, with appropriate payments being provided to the Ethiopian Construction Works Corporation (ECWC).

In addition to this, a delegation from the Ethiopian Customs Commission, led by Commissioner Debele Kabeta, recently paid an official visit to Djibouti from March 20–23, 2023. They met with their counterparts in Djibouti’s customs authorities to address various customs-related matters.

The customs authorities discussed several concerns on customs-related matters, including HS Codification, Custom Values, TIN Number Guarantee, Ethiopian Bill of Loadings, Facilitation of Train Procedures, Export Procedures, and Regional COMESA Transport Guarantee Bonds (RCTG). After three days of discussions, an agreed minute was signed to provide solutions to improve customs efficiency.

These recent developments, including the agreement on the Galamo-Moloud road and the resolution of customs-related issues, indicate that both Ethiopia and Djibouti are committed to working together to enhance trade and transportation.
