Addis Ababa, January 4, 2017 (FMC) – The late Bulcha Demeksa, a distinguished economist and politician, was laid to rest at the Petros and Pawlos Cemetery.
His remains were transported from his residence in Lega Tafo to the Adwa Victory Memorial, where a heartfelt farewell service was attended by government officials, family, and friends, including Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie.
Born in the Boji Dirmeji District of the West Welega Zone to Demeksa Senbeto and Nansisie Serda, Bulcha received his primary education in Ginbi and completed his secondary studies at Kuyera Adventist School.
He earned a first degree in Economics from Addis Ababa University, and later received a scholarship for postgraduate studies at Cornell University, eventually obtaining a second degree in Economics from Syracuse University, where he was recognized with a special award for his academic accomplishments.
Bulcha began his professional journey as a teacher while still a student. Upon returning from his studies abroad, he dedicated seven years to the Ministry of Finance in various leadership roles, including Director of Budget, Assistant Minister, and Deputy Minister. His career also included significant contributions to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Bank, representing 20 African nations.
In addition to his impactful work in economics, Bulcha Demeksa was an advocate for democracy and played a vital role in the political landscape of his country.
He is survived by his wife, six children, and 11 grandchildren. Bulcha Demeksa passed away on January 6 at the age of 94.
