Addis Ababa March 22, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) held a discussion about rehabilitating conflict-affected areas in the country.
ERCS Secretary General Getachew Taa pointed out that it is indispensable to work cooperatively to intervene in the humanitarian situation in the country and the impact of conflict in the northern part of Ethiopia.
Moreover, the secretary general said that collective support and collaboration make a significant difference in helping people who have lost their homes, personal belongings, and livelihoods after a conflict or climate-driven disaster to rehabilitate and rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
Getachew Taa also inquires about a collective effort and emphasizes that holistic support and collaboration are required from the ICRC and the national partner societies.
On her part, the Deputy Regional Director for Movement Affairs Africa, Keren Lieve, acknowledged the humanitarian support ERCS is dedicated to providing for conflict-affected areas.
Furthermore, she suggested targeting the idea of development activities for longer recovery in conflict-affected areas as the best approach for immediate recovery of the lives and livelihoods of the community.
She also discusses the idea of how the ICRC can implement and align itself to address the situation in the northern part of Ethiopia.
As a final point, both sides agreed to further deepen their discussions and broaden their relationship. They further confirmed their commitment to strengthen the relationship and address the issues raised during the discussion.
The team finally visited the ICRC-funded projects, including the emergency operations center, warehouse, and studio, and expressed their appreciation for the work done.
