Envoy calls on ITU to scale up its support to Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, April 1, 2023 (FBC) – Tsegab Kebebew, Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN Office at Geneva and other International organizations in Switzerland, called on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to continue and enhance its support to Ethiopia.

Ambassador Tsegab met with the Secretary General of ITU, Mrs. Doreen Bogdan Martin, and discussed on issues pertaining to future cooperation.

Appreciating its multifaceted assistance to Ethiopia, the envoy called on ITU to continue and scale up the support.

During his insightful discussion with the ITU Secretary-General, Ambassador Tsegab shared Ethiopia’s commitment to ensure universal connectivity by promoting digital accessibility and much-needed reforms in the telecom sector and the concrete results obtained in the process so far, especially in the last four years.

Although the series of reforms undertaken to modernize the telecom sector in Ethiopia are encouraging and effective, in view of the rapid technological development of the telecom sector in the world, the envoy called on ITU to provide improved technical and capacity building support to properly administer and manage the sector in the country.

It is noted that ITU provides various technical, capacity building and related supports to improve Ethiopia’s telecom sector.
