Addis Ababa, March 8, 2024 (FBC) – President Sahle-Work Zewde highlighted the need to empower women to leadership roles in ensuring justice and building peace and democracy.
“It is difficult to assert that there is justice, peace and democracy unless women are empowered to leadership position,” the President underscored.
In her remarks at the event held in Addis Ababa to mark the International Women’s Day, the President lauded indispensible contribution of Ethiopian women in promoting their homeland at the global stage, calling for more action to bring them to leadership positions.
‘Women in Ethiopia and around the world are not asking for special rights but for equal rights. There is no place in the world where women are equal if there are women still experiencing violence. We need to bring peace to our country. Women should be included at the table in peace processes,’ The President added.
Women empowerment should not be limited to only urban areas; rather women in rural communities must be promoted to better positions in all sectors, the President stressed.
President Sahle-Work highlighted the significance of agricultural and educational programs being implemented by the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs in building capacity of rural women in Ethiopia.
