ECCSA, CIIE sign MoU to promote trade, investment between China, Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, May 12, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (ECCSA) and China International Import Expo (CIIE) Bureau have signed MoU to promote the bilateral trade ties between Ethiopia and China.

The MoU is also aimed to create a market link between enterprises of Ethiopia and China.

President of ECCSA, Melaku Azezew and CIIE Representative Pi Jing have signed the MoU representing their respective countries.

On the occasion, the CIIE Representative noted that the Bureau symbolizes China’s keen interest to share its market with Ethiopia, pledging commitment to help Ethiopian companies enter the Chinese market.

Active participation of Ethiopian enterprises and products in the CIIE will play a significant role in enhancing trade and economic ties between the two countries.

Melaku, for his part, said that Ethipians truly feel more at ease and friendly with Chinese companies and pay due respect to the significant achievement of China.

Trade relations between China and Ethiopia has shown significant progress over the past few years following previuos’s allocation of quota and tariff free rights to African countries.

“With this, more than 1,600 Ethiopian goods categories can be imported to China on zero tariffs and without quota limitations after the grant of the duty-free privileges without requiring reciprocation,” he explained.

 He also called on Chinese investors to explore immense potentials in Ethiopia in areas of agriculture, livestock, agro-processing, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, tourism, energy, aviation and telecommunications, among others.

The ECCSA President also underscored that the 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE) to be held in Shanghai, China from upcoming November 5-10 brings good opportunities for Ethiopian producers and exporters to promote their products to the Chinese people and create market links with counterparts in China.
