Drought leaves over 200,000 people in need of urgent food assistance in North Gonder zone

Addis Ababa, September 20, 2023 (FBC) – More than 200,000 people in the North Gondar zone require urgent food assistance due to the severe impact of drought.

Yirdaw Sisay, head of North Gondar zone government communication office, said that 452 thousand 851 people require food assistance in the zone due to impacts of the recurring drought.

Of the aforementioned number of people, some 202,000 urgently need the food assistance, Yirdaw stated.

He mentioned that the occurrence of drought has left some 19 thousand 174 hectares of agricultural land barren.

It is said that the drought has also damaged animals which resulted in measures to move the livestock into other areas.

The official said that 4 thousand 88 people have left their areas in Beyeda, Telemt and Janamora woredas.

As a result of the recurring drought, Yirdaw confirmed the outbreak of communicable disease in those areas. He urged all concerned parties to play their part in averting the issue.
