Addis Ababa, August 14, 2023 (FBC) – Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, received at his office this afternoon the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa.
It is noted that they discussed issues of mutual interest including promoting religious tolerance and peace.
During the meeting, DPM & FM Demeke highlighted Ethiopia’s place in Islam’s history. He added, Ethiopia is home to three UNESCO-inscribed Islamic heritage sites including the Holy City of Harar, Al Nejashi Mosque, Sof Omar Caves as well as other historical mosques and documents.
The Secretary-General, on his part, commended Ethiopia’s long history of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence. He recalled the noteworthy role of Ethiopia’s King Nejashi for granting sanctuary to Muslim exiles that escaped the persecution of the Quraysh. Per MFA Ethiopia.
