DPM & FM Demeke discusses with Qatari, Irish counterparts in New York

Addis Ababa, September 20, 2023 (FBC) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen, held a productive meeting with the Foreign Minister of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Ahmed Al Thani, in New York.

Demeke said that the government is undertaking to consolidate the peace implementation process. Ethiopia is an ideal destination for the Qatari private sector for business and investment, Demeke said.

The Qatari Foreign Minister also said the diplomatic relations with Ethiopia is growing in the best interest of both countries and assured Demeke to support Ethiopia in multilateral forums.

On the bilateral front, both countries need to improve business-to-business cooperation.

In a separate meeting with the foreign Minister of the Republic of Ireland, DPM & FM Demeke said it is high time to revive bilateral relations with the Republic of Ireland.

His Irish counterpart, Micheal Martin, who is also in New York to take part in the 78th UNGA, stated it is the right moment to close the past chapter, normalize relations, and reactivate cooperation in various fields.

The peace agreement is progressing in the right direction, and the situation is promising, Demeke said. He called on Ireland to support the reconstruction and rehabilitation program in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is important, and Ireland works for the long-term mutual benefit of our people, the Irish Foreign Minister said.
