DPM Demeke affirms commitment to make Lalibela hub of tourism 

Addis Ababa, August 23, 2022 (FBC) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demke Mekonnen affirmed government’s commitment to make historical town of Lalibela country’s tourism hub.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister along with other high level government officials including President of the Amhara Regional State Yilkal Kefale is attending the Ashendye Festival in the historical site of Lalibela.

In his remarks at opening of celebration, Demeke said Lalibela hosts Ethiopia’s invaluble and beautiful architectural heritages that still baffle the world community.

He stressed need to further develop tourist destinations and promote the heritages in a way to ensure economic benefit for the people of the area. Demeke delivered appreciation to members of the communiy who sacrificed thier lives, and sustained physical injuries while fighting against the terrorist TPLF group.

Ashendiye which is girls’ unique carnival was not celebrated for the last two years due to the conronavirus pandemic and terrorist TPLF invation.

During celebrations, girls dress colorful cultural colothes, wear thier hair with traditonal manne and tie long grass called ‘Ashenda’ around thier waist, and sing and dance in disarming way while observing the event.
