Development partners briefed on justice sector, homegrown economic reforms

Addis Ababa, May 25, 2021 (FBC) – President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia, Meaza Ashenafi and State Minister of Finance, Yasmin Wohabrebbi briefed Development Partners Group (DPG) executive committee members on the Justice Sector Reform, efforts to enhance capacity in critical institutions mandated to drive forward economic reform priorities.

The two also highlighted preparations for the upcoming election and the latest developments on the humanitarian situation in Tigray.

In her opening remark, Yasmin said that Ethiopia is currently carrying out an inclusive reform agenda that focuses not only on economic growth but rather aims to promote political freedom and democracy to empower all citizens to participate and benefit from the development process.

In her presentation, Meaza Ashenafi elaborated about measures taken as part of the justice sector reform including improving the criminal justice sector as part of the three years road map for the sector to promote an independent and accountable judiciary.

She said the reforms in the Justice, sector are at the heart of the effort to build a stable, democratic, and peaceful country. She also emphasized the need for more capacity building as well as the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for the success of the reforms.

During the meeting, the Development Partners Group (DPG) also explained about programs undertaken for institutional development as part of the implementation of the homegrown economic reform agenda.

Both the government and the DPG agreed on the importance of setting long-term goals for institutional development and in line with this commence a program to address institutional capacity gaps as part of the civil service reform Agenda.
