Deputy PM highlights the need for Africa to empower professional in AI dev’t

Addis Ababa, October 8, 2024 (FBC) – The third edition of the Pan-African Conference on Artificial Intelligence officially launched with His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh and numerous high-ranking ministers and officials in attendance including President of the Federal Supreme Court, Tewodros Mihret, Director General of the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, Worku Gachena (PhD).

In his keynote speech, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh declared, “Africa is not a passive consumer of technology. We are ready to lead.” His remarks underscored Africa’s growing role in shaping global technological advancements.

The Deputy Premier highlighted that PanAfriConAI has become a symbol of Africa’s technological achievements and a cornerstone for the continent’s AI development.

The Deputy PM called upon Africans to embrace the spirit of Ubuntu—’I am because we are’—as a guiding principle for AI, ensuring that the continent’s approach prioritizes community, ethics, and shared prosperity.

Temesgen emphasized that Ethiopia is focused on advancing its initiatives in artificial intelligence. The Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh, highlighted the importance of promoting the artificial intelligence sector across Africa to drive universal development.

During the conference, a variety of research papers were presented, showcasing the impact and applications of artificial intelligence in multiple domains.

He urged that Africans should leverage this opportunity by empowering professionals in the field through education, training, and research.

The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute is organizing the 3rd Pan African Conference on AI, taking place today and tomorrow under the theme “Empowering Africa with Artificial Intelligence.”
