Czech Republic’s water collaboration with Ethiopia lauded

Addis Ababa, November 4, 2023 (FBC) – Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala visited the Ministry of Water and Energy today to learn more about the two countries’ long and successful cooperation in the water sector.

During his visit, the Czech  premier was briefed by Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa and State Ministers Abrha Adugna and Sultan Wali on the practical results of Ethiopia’s cooperation with the Czech Republic.

Habtamu highlighted the Czech financial contributions to Ethiopia’s water sector, noting that the cooperation relating to hydrological studies amounts to over 38 million euros.

The Czech Republic ”has been assisting us in the fields of surface water and underground research. Their underground and surface water research in terms of finance amounts to 38 million euros. The areas where we work are Somali region, Sidama region, South region, Amhara region, where the (country) was helping with underground research,” the minister said.

The Czech Geological Survey (CGS) has a long history of cooperation, including hydro-geological mapping of Ethiopia, with Ethiopia since the late 1970s, according to ENA.

The CGS has assisted Ethiopia to map the hydro-geology of the entire country. This information is essential for managing Ethiopia’s water resources, which are under increasing pressure due to population growth and climate change.

Recall that the Czech Republic and Ethiopia have a long history of cooperation, dating back to the early 20th century.

The visit of Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala is a testament to the strong and enduring ties between the republic and Ethiopia, and their shared commitment to water security and sustainable development.
