Customs Commission manages to prevent 50.4bln birr worth of fraud loss 

Addis Ababa, August 22, 2022 (FBC) – Ethiopian Customs Commission has confirmed that it has managed to prevent fraud loss worth more than 50.4 billion Ethiopian birr in the 2021/22 fiscal year.

Debele Kabeta, Commissioner of the Customs Commission, explained that the commission has fulfilled its mission in the previous fiscal year, has boosted the country’s economy and is carrying out works that protect the interests of the people.

The commissioner also recalled that the commission was able to collect 140.5 billion birr revenue (90.7% of the plan for the fiscal year).

He mentioned that enormous works have been done in the last fiscal year so that smuggling and illegal trade did not cause serious damage to the country’s economy and its security.

By strengthening the internal capacity, participation of society and stakeholders in the prevention of illegal trade and smuggling, as well as by strengthening the coordination of institutions, Ethiopia was able to save more than 50.4 billion birr, affirmed the commission.
