Addis Ababa, September 3, 2023 (FBC) – The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) has called for collaborative efforts to exploit Rift Valley lakes for eco-tourism, irrigation and drinking water.
The Ministry made the request during a discussion with stakeholders to develop the Central Rift Valley Lakes around Denbel Shala through collaborative efforts.
Mr. Abraha Adugna, Minister of State for Water Resources Management at the Ministry, said that guidelines are being prepared and worked on to identify water resources in terms of quantity and quality and tap them for public benefits.
Addressing the meeting, the Minister of State underlined the importance of working cooperatively to utilize Rift Valley lakes for eco-tourism, irrigation, drinking water and other purposes.
He said that guidelines have been prepared to work in coordination with stakeholders and investors to overcome the challenges that are threatening the lakes.
Since the Central Rift Valley area has promising potential water resources, an action plan has been drawn up and entities that can benefit in the sector have been identified, he indicated.
The Ministry also confirmed it is working with the relevant parties to turn the challenges imposed on the lakes into opportunities for the benefit of the local community.
