Canada recognizes Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to refugees: Ambassador

Addis Ababa, March 1, 2024 (FBC) – The Director General of the Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS), Teyiba Hassen, welcomed Jennifer MacIntyre, Assistant Deputy Minister of International Affairs and Crisis Response – Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Joshua Tabah, the Canadian Ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti.

The two have discussed pressing matters pertaining to the Ethiopia Refugee Operation.

During the meeting, the Assistant Deputy Minister reaffirmed Canada’s profound recognition of Ethiopia’s unwavering dedication in hosting refugees and its commitment to accommodating those recently fleeing from Sudan and Somalia.

She expressed deep appreciation for Ethiopia’s notable contributions and commitments made at the Global Refugee Forum (GRF) 2023, and reiterated the Canadian government’s full support for the successful implementation of these pledges.

Both parties underscored the importance of strengthening the longstanding cooperation between their respective countries, particularly in the realm of development.

Recognizing the mutual benefits of collaboration, they emphasized the need to enhance bilateral ties and explore new avenues for joint initiatives.

Teyiba Hassen expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Canadian government for its efforts in providing improved resettlement opportunities for refugees residing in Ethiopia, thereby contributing to the pursuit of durable solutions.

She said the initiatives are aimed at positively transforming the lives of refugees and the communities hosting them.

Both parties reaffirmed commitment to strengthen cooperation and work towards effecting meaningful change in the lives of refugees and host communities.
