Addis Ababa, October 22, 2024 (FBC) – In an exclusive interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), Professor Zenebe Kinfu emphasized that Ethiopia’s historic ties with Russia present a significant opportunity for the nation to leverage its BRICS membership for deeper cooperation with other member countries.
According to Professor Zenebe, over 26,000 Ethiopian students have pursued higher education in Russian universities, highlighting the long-standing partnership in human resource development between the two nations. He noted that Ethiopia and Russia have consistently supported each other on the international stage, strengthening their diplomatic and political relations.
Recently, both countries have collaborated to enhance trade, economic, science, technology and investment relations. Professor Zenebe identified BRICS as a promising platform for Ethiopia to expand its engagements with additional member states.
The professor pointed out that BRICS brings together like-minded countries, and with Russia currently holding the presidency, there are increased opportunities for Ethiopia to maximize its membership benefits for socio-economic development.
Ethiopia is actively participating in BRICS+, attending meetings focused on enhancing its involvement in the framework, which underscores the nation’s commitment to the group. Professor Zenebe expressed optimism that Ethiopia is well-positioned to take advantage of the opportunities offered by BRICS+, particularly in trade, economy, investment and tourism sectors.
Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reforms have created a favorable environment for attracting investment from BRICS+ member countries. He believes that the ongoing BRICS Summit in Kazan will provide valuable opportunities for member nations to identify key areas for cooperation.
The participation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in the BRICS Summit will play a significant role in strengthening nation’s aspiration to ensure its multifaceted benefits from the platform, he added.
He further urged the Ethiopian government and stakeholders to effectively promote its investment and tourism potential to fully capitalize on this platform for national benefits.
