Addis Ababa, June 13, 2023 (FBC) – Axum Town Culture and Tourism Office announced that the Aksum tourist attraction areas have been reopened today for tourists.
According to the Head of the Culture and Tourism Office of Axum Town, Gebremedihn Fitsum Berhan announced that tangible and intangible heritages in Axum town and its suburbia have been reopened to tourists.
He also said that the local community’s concerted efforts were pivotal for the reopening of the tourist attractions to visitors in Axum.
Gebremedihn stated that routine training was delivered to photographers, interpreters, traditional jewelers and sculptors as well as hoteliers to restore the tourism sector and increase the services provided by the local community to tourists.
Hence, the obelisks and museums in and around Axum have been re-opened for tourists from today, he added.
The Head of the Office recalled that more than 30,000 foreign tourists used to flock to Axum and its surrounding areas every year to visit the tangible and intangible antiquities.
He also mentioned that his office and the local residents used to earn more than 180 million birr annually from tourists’ 2 to 3 day stay in Aksum and its surroundings.
