Addis Ababa, December 18, 2024 (FMC) – The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) convened a high-level meeting with key institutions to discuss the enhancement of Ethiopia’s National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) System. This initiative supports the country’s ambitious target to reduce GHG emissions by 68.8% by 2030, as outlined in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
In her opening remarks, Lelise Neme, Director General of the EPA, highlighted Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to bolster environmental protection and tackle climate change through various initiatives led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).
Among others, the Green Legacy Initiative, river side development endeavors, corridor development activities, and national directives to promote electric vehicles are contributing to a significant decline in greenhouse gas emission.
The Director General emphasized that effective measurement, reporting, and verification are crucial for mobilizing resources, securing climate finance from international partners, attracting foreign direct investment, and maximizing tourism potentials besides supporting the efforts to achieve climate goals.
The meeting brought together senior representatives from several developmental ministries, including Agriculture, Industry, Urban and Infrastructure Development, Transport and Logistics, Health, and Water and Energy. The EPA, designated as the national Verification Authority, underscored the need for inter-ministerial cooperation and the enhancement of capacities within regional and woreda administrations to meet Ethiopia’s climate objectives.
