Addis Ababa, March 25, 2021 (FBC) – A national Committee comprising various institutions and individuals has organized an observance for coming Sunday to recognize athlete Derartu Tulu as the first Olympic winning African woman and best achieving person in various fields of engagements.
In a press briefing held today, the committee said Derartu Tulu has contributed to the social and economic developments in the county as an investor and philanthropist besides her role as a best athlete of several achievements.
Derartu created thousands of jobs in the hotel tourism and other sector she has engaged in several parts of Ethiopia, the committee said.
In 1992, Derartu Tulu became the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold, in somewhat of a surprise. She did so by winning the 10,000 m ahead of Elana Meyer of South Africa, with whom she had led the race most of the way, distancing the field.
