Association calls for increased use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes

Addis Ababa, February 9, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopian Nuclear Science Society (ENSS) called for increased use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The first professional society in Ethiopia established in August 2021.

Addressing an interntional conference held in Addis Ababa under the theme “Regional to Global: Africa” , President of the ENSS, Emshaw Damtew, said that Ethiopia has been using nuclear energy in some health institutions for medical purposes over the past three years such as cancer detection and treatments.

he said that nuclear energy can serve as an engine to fast track the stride in the agricultural sector if it is developed and used in an increased manner accordingly.

Emshaw elaborated that Ethiopia can accelerate its economic growth if it uses nuclear, the most low carbon source of energy, for various activities including the health and agriculture areas, he said.

It is possible to reduce the use of pesticides in the agricultural sector for sterilizing of pests is carried out with nuclear energy; it is indicated on the conference.

Abel Didier Tella (Cote d’Ivoire), Member of the Advisory Board of the Global Energy Association, Dirctor General of the Association of Power Utilities of Africa, for his part said close to 600 million people are living under poverty in Africa, stressing a need to seek alternative energies such as nuclear power to address development aspiration of peoples in the continent.

The conference included a presentation by the Global Energy Association, the operator of the Prize of the same name. Sergey Brilev, President of the Association, outlined the details of the new cycle of nominations for the award, which began on January 1, 2003.
