Ankara Agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia a catalyst for enhanced regional peace, development: Analyst

Addis Ababa, December 17, 2024 (FMC) – The recent “Ankara Declaration,” which signifies an agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia to resolve their differences through friendship and mutual respect, is deemed vital for fostering peace and development in the region, according to Sudanese Analyst, Press Writer and Media Consultant, Mekki Elmograbi.

In an exclusive interview with FMC, Mekki Elmograbi emphasized that this agreement is positioned to ease diplomatic tensions between the two nations, paving the way for enhanced cooperation. He remarked that countries in the Horn of Africa share deep connections through history, culture, and language, and that the Turkish-brokered agreement empowers Ethiopia and Somalia to address their disputes amicably while steering clear of external influences.

The analyst also highlighted the sacrifices made by Ethiopian forces for peace and stability in Somalia, recognizing that these contributions were acknowledged by Somalia’s leadership during the agreement. He pointed out that this moment serves to illuminate Ethiopia’s role in promoting peace and development in the region, as well as its aspirations for access to the sea—an essential need for a country of its size and growing economic ambitions.

Mekki urged nations and leaders to recognize that Ethiopia’s economic progress benefits the entire region, citing the country’s achievements in enhancing regional connections through the green energy sector as tangible evidence of this impact. The analyst asserted that Ethiopia is committed to ensuring peace and stability while fostering regional economic integration, adding that the Ankara Declaration enhances Ethiopia’s diplomatic and economic engagements.

Moreover, he stressed that countries in the region and beyond should respect Ethiopia’s pursuit of sea access, which he believes is crucial for achieving the nation’s development goals and supporting its ongoing contributions to regional economic advancement. Mekki concluded that the Ankara Declaration stands as a testament to Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to regional peace, creating opportunities for intensified diplomatic and economic collaboration in the future.
