Analyst highlights Ethiopia’s enduring legacy as Africa’s diplomatic hub and beacon of hope

Addis Ababa, December 26, 2024 (FMC) – In an exclusive interview with Fana Media Corporation, Desalegn Masrie, senior analyst on international relations and diplomacy, shared his insights on Ethiopia’s significant contributions to the socio-economic and political achievements in the African continent and its historical leadership role in the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union (AU).

Ethiopia’s role in supporting nation’s struggle for independence and its consequential impact on the African continent was underscored by Desalegn, who described the country as a “beacon of light” for nations that were grappling with colonialism.

“Ethiopia stood as one of the few countries to resist colonialism and maintain its independence while inspiring other African states to seek liberation,” he remarked. The pivotal 1963 summit hosted by Emperor Haile Selassie in Addis Ababa essentially laid the groundwork for the OAU, bringing together leaders from 30 independent African nations. Masrie emphasized Ethiopia’s integral role in bridging ideological divides among African leaders, thereby setting a precedent for collective action against colonial rule.

Transitioning from the OAU to the AU, Desalegn noted that while the organization evolved to prioritize peace-building and sustainable development, Ethiopia has continuously played a central role in facilitating continental dialogue and conflict resolution initiatives.

He pointed to Ethiopia’s active participation in AU-led peacekeeping missions, particularly the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), underscoring the nation’s commitment to regional stability. “Ethiopia’s involvement is not limited to Somalia; it extends to peace negotiations in Sudan and South Sudan, highlighting its broader influence in promoting peace across the Horn of Africa,” he added.

As the host of the AU’s headquarters, Addis Ababa has solidified its status as Africa’s diplomatic capital. Desalegn highlighted that major continental summits occurring in the city enhance its status as a hub for international cooperation, fostering agreements on crucial issues affecting the continent. The economic implications are significant, as these summits attract substantial foreign investment and tourism, which further bolster the city’s growth.

Looking ahead, Desalegn mentioned ongoing initiatives by the Addis Ababa city government aimed at enhancing the capital’s livability and attractiveness, particularly leading up to the next AU summit. He pointed to developments like new transportation corridors designed to improve traffic flow and urban beautification projects that reflect the city’s commitment to maintain international standards.

Desalegn explained that the naming of major streets and highways in the capital after African countries, demonstrates Addis Ababa’s identity as the heart of the thriving continent.

Additionally, Desalegn praised the introduction of smart city initiatives, including advanced parking systems, new tourist destinations and parks, and the enhanced environmental conservation projects, highlighting their role in elevating the standard of the city as an international conference and tourism destination.

He emphasized that the recently inaugurated Adwa Museum serves as a testament to Ethiopia’s rich history and resistance against colonization, inspiring a renewed sense of African identity and pride.

In summary, Desalegn Masrie’s analysis highlights the multifaceted role Ethiopia continues to play in the sustainability and socio-economic growth of African nations.

From its historical contributions to the establishment of continental organizations to ongoing development initiatives, Ethiopia remains at the forefront of promoting peace, development, and a cohesive African identity, according to Desalegn.

As Addis Ababa prepares to welcome international dialogues at the upcoming AU summit, the city is poised to reinforce its role as a pivotal center for diplomacy on the continent, Desalegn added.
