Addis Ababa, March 14, 2025 (FMC) — Ambassadors and heads of missions of various countries residing in Addis Ababa visited the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) this week, the dam’s social media handle confirmed today.
The visit, organized by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was attended by the ambassadors of Russia and South African Ambassador as well as heads of diplomatic missions station in the Ethiopian capital.
On the occasion, Ethiopia’s Minister of Irrigation and Lowlands, Abraham Belay (PhD), briefed the diplomats on the current status and construction progress of the dam.
In his presentation, the Minister explained that there are two power generating units on the left and right sides of the dam, six power generating turbines on the left side of the dam, and seven power generating turbines on the right side of the dam. After the water rushes from above and hits the turbine with force, generating power, it continues to flow naturally under the turbine, he explained.
He pointed out that when the construction is completed, 5,760 gigawatt hours of electricity can be supplied to the national power grid annually from the dam.
