Addis Ababa, September 20, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian agriculture sector has registered growth beyond the plan in the first 3 years of the Ten-Year Development Plan (2013-2015 E.C), the Ministry of Planning and Development (MoPD) data shows.
According to the Ministry’s report, the growth of the agricultural sector increased from 5.1% in 2013E.C to 5.8% in 2014 and 6̄.3% in 2015 E.C.
Among the sub-sectors under the agriculture sector, crop production holds the largest share in the growth of agriculture and has contributed 65.5% to the growth of the sector. It is also noted that forest had 8.6% share and animals had 25.9% share.
In 2015 E.C (2022/23 fiscal year), some 639 million quintals of crop was produced, surpassing the total plan of 627 million quintals.
It is indicated that promising agricultural activities have been undertaken in this “meher growing season” through regular rain and irrigation across the country.
The animal development sub-sector has grown by an average of 8.4% over the last 2 years and is 0.8% higher than the 10-year plan, the Ministry’s data elucidates.
Small and large farms’ irrigated crops, vegetables, fruits and root crops production have played significant role for growth in volume of the sector, it is mentioned.
