Agriculture Ministry, KOICA launch initiative to enhance milk quality

Addis Ababa, January 3, 2025 (FMC) – The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has officially launched a project aimed at elevating the quality of milk and dairy products in Ethiopia. Titled “Improving Quality of Milk and Milk Products in Ethiopia through Targeting Human Capacity Related to the Dairy Value-Chain Activity,” this initiative seeks to transform the country’s dairy sector.

During the launch event, State Minister of Agriculture Dr. Fikeru Regasa emphasized the project’s importance in supporting Ethiopia’s efforts to modernize its dairy industry. “This initiative aligns with our national vision as outlined in the ‘Bounty of Basket Program’ and the Ethiopian National Dairy Strategy (2022-2031),” he stated.

Dr. Fikeru highlighted that the ‘Bounty of Basket Program’ has created opportunities for genetic advancements, improved nutrition, enhanced veterinary services, and market development. However, he also acknowledged critical challenges facing the dairy sector, including low productivity, limited market access, and significant capacity gaps that must be addressed.

“We are collaborating with research institutions, private sector partners, NGOs, and local communities to strengthen our sector, benefiting our farmers and contributing to national food security,” Dr. Fikeru noted. He reiterated the importance of closing existing gaps and fostering cooperation among stakeholders to develop a thriving dairy industry that serves all Ethiopians.

Dr. Asrat Tera, Director General of the Livestock Development Institute (LDI), expressed the shared goal of KOICA, the Ministry of Agriculture, and LDI to transform milk quality standards, improve productivity, and empower local communities. “We are committed to enhancing milk quality infrastructures and building the capacity of all stakeholders in the value chain,” he said.

In conclusion, Dr. Asrat affirmed that through strong partnerships, they are working towards a more sustainable dairy sector in Ethiopia.
