Addis Ababa, November 26, 2024 (FBC) — The Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute and the Shanghai Engineering Center of China have signed an agreement to launch Ethiopia’s 3rd earth observation satellite.
The agreement was signed for the joint development and launch of the satellite, named ETRSS-2.
Accordingly, the procurement process for the third satellite, which was conducted through an international open bidding process, has been completed and a contract has been signed with the winning company.
On the occasion, Director General of the Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI), Mr. Abdisa Yilma said the development work on the new satellite will be carried out for 18 months under the agreement.
He also reminded that the institute has built and is starting work on a 12-meter Earth Observation Satellite data receiving ground station this year.
It was announced that the necessary preparations have been made to launch Ethiopia’s 3rd Earth Observation Satellite; and to address the problem of educated manpower in the field.
