Addis Ababa, August 28, 2023 (FBC) – Delegations from Ethiopia, Egypt and the Sudan completed the first round of the tripartite negotiation on the first filling and annual operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) earlier today.
The parties exchanged views to reach a win-win situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia indicated.
The delegations also agreed that Ethiopia will host the next round of negotiation in September 2023, in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia will endeavor to conclude the trilateral negotiation based on the principle of equitable and reasonable utilization while ensuring its rightful share of the Nile waters, MFA Ethiopia noted.
Recall that the tripartite negotiation on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) resumed on 27 August 2023 in Cairo Egypt.
The Ethiopian delegation led by Seleshi Bekele, Ethiopian Ambassador to the U.S. and the Former Minister of Water and Energy, has been participating in the negotiations.
The head of the Ethiopian negotiation team, Amb. Seleshi stated that, the talks will further enhance the cooperation among the three countries of Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. He also stressed the immense benefits of the GERD to the people of Sudan and Egypt.
Ethiopia has the right to utilize the waters of the Nile River to meet the needs of current and future generations with firm commitment to the equitable and reasonable utilization of the Nile, the Head of the negotiation team noted. He added, Ethiopia strives to effect an amicable solution through negotiation.
