Addis Ababa, July 14, 2023 (FBC) – The National Rehabilitation Commission of Ethiopia (NRC) has announced that some 75,000 ex-combatants are expected to rehabilitation centers by December 2023.
The Commission is consulting with non-governmental organizations regarding the placement of ex-combatants in rehabilitation centres.
Speaking at the meeting, the head of the Commission’s office, Mr. Shanko Delelegn, said that the support of partners is crucial for the successful completion of the work of bringing ex-combatants to rehabilitation centers.
The Commission has planned to integrate 50 thousand ex-combatants from Tigray region and 25 thousand from other regions to the centers until the end of December 2023, Shanko said.
It is known that the Commission was established on 30th December 2022 to rehabilitate citizens to be disarmed and enable them to lead normal civilian life, as well as be part of efforts for national development, peace and democracy building in line with the Pretoria peace agreement signed between the federal government and TPLF.
NRC has developed the National Demobilization and Reintegration Programme (NDRP) for ex-combatants after the signing of the Peace Agreement in Pretoria last year. This National Programme is designed to support the demobilization and reintegration of up to 250,000 ex-combatants in Ethiopia and is being implemented in several parts of the country, making an important contribution to national efforts to consolidate peace and promote stability.
