Addis Ababa, February 28, 2024 (FBC) – Gedion Timothewos, the Minister of Justice of Ethiopia, addressed today the UN Human Rights Council at the ongoing 55th regular session, which started yesterday, on February 26/2024 in Geneva
In his recorded video speech, the Minister took the opportunity to provide the Human Rights Council measures the Government of Ethiopia has been taking to ensure accountability in the country.
He underscored that the government has been committed to ensure that the process of adopting the Transitional Justice policy will be inclusive, victim-centered, and transparent.
Gedion, in his remarks, expounded the preparations made so far and noted that a comprehensive report and a draft policy has been submitted to the Ministry of Justice by an independent experts group. Once the draft is validated by stakeholders, it is expected to be submitted to the Council of Ministers, he disclosed.
The Minister thanked the East African Regional Office of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission for their support throughout the process.
He further reaffirmed the government`s commitment to resolve differences through peaceful means.
