317,521 hectares of land prepared for Friday’s Green Legacy tree-planting campaign

Addis Ababa, August 21, 2024 (FBC) – The Government Communication Service and the Ministry of Agriculture, in a joint statement, confirmed that a total of 317,521 hectares of land has been prepared for the upcoming nationwide Green Legacy planting campaign on Friday.

Recall that Prime Minister Abiy recently announced a one-day Green Legacy tree-planting campaign, which is set to take place on August 23, 2024. The ambitious goal of the campaign is to plant over 600 million tree seedlings within a 12-hour period. To achieve this objective, every adult and teenager has been tasked with planting more than 20 and 10 seedlings, respectively, in order to leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

In a joint press conference held today, Minister of Agriculture Girma Amente and State Minister for Government Communication Services Selamawit Kassa provided an update on the preparations for the upcoming one-day Green Legacy tree-planting campaign. They announced that all necessary preparations have been completed for the event, which aims to plant over 600 million tree seedlings within a 12-hour period on August 23, 2024. According to Minister Girma, a total of 8,452 mapped sites have been prepared across all regions to facilitate the massive tree-planting initiative.

Minister Girma Amente provided additional details about the preparations for the one-day Green Legacy tree-planting campaign. He revealed that the total area of the mapped sites, where the tree seedlings will be planted, amounts to 317,521 hectares of land. Furthermore, he stated that the necessary tree seedlings have been prepared in close proximity to these sites.

The press conference also mentioned that the planting schedule for the campaign will span a continuous 12-hour period from 6:00 am to 6:00 am throughout Ethiopia, ensuring that the ambitious goal of planting over 600 million tree seedlings within the given timeframe can be achieved.
