Addis Ababa, January 9, 2021 (FBC) -The 2020 TOTAL Great Ethiopian Run will take place in Addis Ababa tomorrow, Sunday Jan 10, with a reduced number of participants due to COVID-19 pandemic.
The race is being staged in three separate wave starts to allow greater distancing among participants following guidelines given to the organisers by national health authorities.
The start of the race is at its traditional venue in Meskel Square but the finish has been moved to the Atlas Hotel in Bole.
Around 300 elite athletes will compete for the top prizes where both male and female winners will take home a winner’s prize of 100,000 birr.
Among those entered in the men’s race are two-time world 5,000m champion Muktar Idris and the 2016 champion Abe Gashahun. In the women’s race Tsige Gebreselama will start as one of the race favourites.
Due to restrictions on international travel, international participant numbers are lower than normal this year, although the elite races will still see the participation of athletes from Kenya and Eritrea.
In the Ambassadors’ race, the ambassadors of Japan, Finland, Poland and Turkey are expected to take part.
The 10-kilometre road race will be live-streamed on Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) via satellite TV and online.
