Ambassador Mulu briefs German Parliament CDU/CSU-group on latest developments in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, March 24, 2021 (FBC) -Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to the Federal Republic of Germany, Mulu Solomon briefed member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) working group on Economic Cooperation and Development of CDU /CSU-group on latest developments in Etihopia.

Over 32 Member of Parliament and the working group were present on the WebEx-meeting which has focused on current situations in Ethiopia, the law enforcement in Tigray, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the Ethio-Sudan border issue, and the upcoming Election.

Ambassador Mulu highlighted that the government saved the horn by stopping the TPLF attack and its wider plan of destabilizing the country. She also mentioned that the region, otherwise, would have been a breeding area for terrorism due to TPLF’s destructive roles.

She also stated that, though TPLF destroyed critical infrastructures, the Government has rebuilt and supplied Aid to 4.1 million people in Tigray, out of which 70pct of the total has been covered by the resource of the Government and the 30% by the international community and NGOs.

With regard to Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, she noted that the dam should be a point for cooperation and stressed that the project is not a luxury for Ethiopia rather it provides the much needed energy to lift the fast-growing population from poverty by creating job opportunities which intern will reduce migration.

She expressed that AU facilitated trilateral negotiation to be a viable way to reach agreement, Ambassador Mulu underlined that Ethiopia has the right to use its resources based on international practices without causing significant harm to the downstream countries.

Regarding the border issue with the Sudan should be peacefully resolved by exhaustively using the already existing modalities, Ambassador Mulu said.

With regard to Election, Ambassador Mulu stated that an exemplary, free and fair election will be held. She added that local observers from diverse background and international observers including the European Union has been invited to observe the election.

In her final remarks Ambassador Mulu thanked German Parliamentarians and Government for the support in Humanitarian Aid, Election, COVID-19, Reform partnership and contribution to the peace and stability of Ethiopia and longstanding relation between the two countries.

Honorable Volkmar Klein, Policy spokesperson of the Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development in the German Parliament (Bundestag) on his part noted that Ethiopia remains Germany’s important partner.
