Amb. Tizita commends India’s impartial, non-interventionist role in UNSC
Addis Ababa, September 24, 2022 (FBC) – Tizita Mulugeta, Ambassador of Ethiopia to India, commended India’s impartial and non-interventionist role in the UN Security Council, particularly on issues concerning Ethiopia.
Ambassador Tizita Mulugeta briefed think tanks, diplomats, academicians, practitioners, and journalists in New Delhi on the current state of affairs in Ethiopia.
At the briefing, Ambassador Tizita focused on the conflict in northern parts of Ethiopia and the government’s effort to close the chapter of war through peaceful means.
Concerning the conflict, the Ambassador recalled that the federal government has made several attempts to peacefully resolve the conflict in the Tigray Region, including declaring a unilateral humanitarian truce, lifting the state of emergency, halting the advance of its troops to Mekelle, releasing detainees suspected of being affiliated with the TPLF, and taking other confidence-building measures.
However, the TPLF consistently downplayed the Ethiopian government’s repeated calls for peaceful resolution of the conflict and launched the third round of war on August 24, 2022, reigniting the conflict and flagrantly violating the humanitarian truce, she noted.
Ambassador Tizita further noted that the international community should acknowledge the government’s commitment to end the conflict through the peace facilitation led by the African Union.
She, then, urged the IC to pressurize the TPLF to stop its violence and be ready for peace talks without any preconditions since the government is ready to do so.
She also addressed the trilateral negotiation over the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the future prospects of collaboration between India and Ethiopia in various spheres of endeavor.
Ambassador Tizita responded to the queries and remarks raised by the audience. The forum also brought together diplomats and former ambassadors of various countries, think tanks senior researchers and practitioners, as well as journalists, and was attended both virtually and physically.
