Africa prioritizes health, nutrition issues amid global circumstances: AUC Chairperson
Addis Ababa, February 15, 2023 (FBC) – Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said the outcomes of the activities carried out by different organs of the African Union over the past year will be evaluated during the 42nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 36th AU Summit and directives will be put in place for future endeavors.
He said that a wide range of activities have been carried out within the context of the continuation of the difficulties at the level of health, economy across the world.
“Such difficulties have contributed to the geopolitics in the world with more in uncertainties and remodeling, restructuring and restructuring of international configurations,” Moussa Faki Mahamat said.
Progression of terrorism and return of unconstitutional changes of government continues to be the threat of peace and security of the continent despite continued efforts to curtail these challenges.
“Africa continues despite these challenges. Africa has shown great signs of resilience as it maintained its operational dynamics in the implementation of programs and decisions passed by the AU,” he noted.
Taking into account the impact of the various crisis that have shaken the world, the African Union has given priority to health and nutrition issues, according to Chairperson.
While mitigating the effects of the global crisis, and continuing efforts to meet the needs of the people of the continent, the African Union tried to look for long-term solutions.
Africa is working had to seek long-term solution for health and nutrition problems by enhancing capacity of production of food and medicine, and to reduce continent’s dependency on the external world.
Operationalization of Africa CDC is nearing its completion, and establishment Africa Medicine Agency is underway as the venue for the headquarters has already been chosen, he added.
The Chairperson also stressed need to promoting industries and accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Regarding the efforts to maintain peace and stability in Africa, the Chairperson said that peace is prevailing in most parts of Africa, and peace processes in Ethiopia and Sudan have yielded results, he said.
Efforts are underway to bring peaceful solutions to the issues in various African countries including DRC, Mali, Burkina Faso and Libya, he added.
