First filling of GERD denotes Ethiopia’s diplomatic triumph globally: Experts
Addis Ababa, July 23, 2020 (FBC) – Experts said the successful first filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam denotes nation’s diplomatic triumph over the negations held for a decade to address Nile Water issues.
Endale Nigussie, Diplomacy and International Professor at Addis Ababa University, exclusively told FBC that first filling of the dam clearly indicates how Ethiopia has triumphantly concluded its long diplomatic journey over the Abay River.
Endale noted Ethipia has managed to bring back the issue of the Nile to Addis Ababa calling a move a double victory over the dipute.
Comparing the issues with that of the Adwa victory, Endale said Ethiopia has become in a good position in line with leading the African issue towards the right track under control of Africans.
The successful victory over GERD apparentyly shows how Ethiopia’s diplomatic influence is growing at the regional and international level.
Getachew Mekonnen, a researcher at Ethiopian Insititute of Strategic Research, to his part, said African Union has shown its panafricanism spirit during the negotiations held of GERD for it has achieved its mission in line with addressing an African Problems by Africans themselves.
“Ethiopia has been up to principles of fair and reasonable use of the Nile Waters seeking regional solution while Egypt was taking the issue to various countries outside Africa and several international organizations,” said Endale adding “Ethiopia has achived double victory both in the construction of the dam and the diplomatic arena”
The role of the African Union and its chairman, President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, conforms to the African Union Development Agenda 2063 that stipulates African Solution to African Problems, Getachew added.
