Kenya affirms the role of GERD for regional economic integration

Addis Ababa, June 19, 2020 (FBC) – The Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya, Justin Muturi said the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has a big role for economic integration in the east African region.

The assertion from the speaker came while he was holding discussions with Ethiopian Ambassador to Kenya, Meles Alem at his office yesterday.

He demanded the trilateral talks on GERD to comply with win – win principle cognizant of mutual cooperation among riparian countries.

The speaker of the Kenyan National Assembly said that he respects Ethiopia’s rights to utilize its natural resources for development proposes.

Ambassador Meles briefed on developments related to negotiations held over the last days between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt on the Guidelines and Rules for the first filling and annual operation of the GERD.

The two reached an agreement to set up joint hands between the parliaments of the two countries for joint cooperation in regional and international areas of cooperation.

Ethiopians do not need consent of any outside forces to fully complete the dam which they are building with their own budget, the speaker said.

It is to be recalled that the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyata called for African solutions to African problems.
