Sudan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia advocates for strengthened bilateral relations
Addis Ababa, January 10, 2025 (FMC) – Elizein Ibrahim Hussein, the Sudanese Ambassador to Ethiopia, has underscored the significance of enhancing cooperative ties between the two nations.
During a recent press briefing, he discussed the current situation in Sudan and reiterated the longstanding shared history and geographical closeness that unites Ethiopia and Sudan, highlighting the essential role of their citizens in fostering robust diplomatic relations.
“Our aim is to ensure amicable relations, promote positive diplomacy, and engage constructively with our Ethiopian partners,” Ambassador Elizein stated.
Regarding Sudan’s suspension from the African Union (AU), he explained that the action was taken on October 26, 2021, due to disagreements over the civilian aspect of the transitional government. The Ambassador asserted Sudan’s strong aspiration to reintegrate into the AU, emphasizing its historical contributions to the organization and its commitment to tackling African issues.
He criticized the AU’s suspension decision, indicating that it might obstruct Sudan’s quest for locally-driven solutions to its internal challenges. He urged a more supportive stance from the AU, stressing the need to appreciate Sudan’s unique context, which includes its geography, populace, history, and contributions to the continent, according to EPA.
Acknowledging the difficulties Sudan faces during its current transition, the Ambassador expressed optimism for renewed interactions with Ethiopia, suggesting informal meetings to discuss collaborative efforts. He highlighted the importance of considering Sudan’s viewpoint and proposed organizing a session with the 15 member countries of the AU’s Peace and Security Council.
Ethiopia and Sudan share a rich and diverse history that traces back to ancient times, marking the potential for deepened partnership, he underscored.
