Rehabilitative Training Commences for Former Combatants in Amhara Region
Addis Ababa, December 30, 2024 (FMC) – Following the Amhara Regional Government’s calls for peace, former combatants who have embraced the path of peace have commenced rehabilitative training at the Dabat Rehabilitation Center.
The extremist group had long inflicted immense suffering upon the populace, obstructing vital services such as education and development initiatives through the disruption of transportation routes.
The Regional Government consistently extended an olive branch, urging the group to resolve the conflict through peaceful dialogue and negotiation.
Responding to this call, former members of this extremist group, remorseful for their past actions, are now returning to the society, eager to contribute to the region’s development.
Among those currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Dabat Rehabilitation Center are approximately 900 former combatants who were previously active in the North Gondar Zone.
Fasil Dilnessa, Coordinator of the Dabat Rehabilitation Center, emphasized that this training program is meticulously designed to equip these individuals with the necessary training to reintegrate seamlessly into society and lead peaceful lives.
The former combatants, acknowledging the destructive nature of their past actions, expressed deep regret for the harm inflicted upon their communities. They candidly admitted that the path of violence was misguided and counterproductive.
“We believe that others will follow their example,” stated Fasil Dilnessa, emphasizing the transformative potential of this initiative.
He further elaborated that the training encompasses a comprehensive range of topics, including national affairs, contemporary issues, and the cultivation of a peaceful and harmonious society.
Upon successful completion of the program, these individuals will be empowered to lead peaceful and productive lives within their communities, contributing to the healing process and rebuilding efforts.
The former combatants poignantly recounted the devastating consequences of their past actions, acknowledging the loss of life, displacement, and destruction of property that ensued. They expressed profound remorse for the disruption of education, which deprived countless children of their fundamental right to learn.
Recognizing the futility of their past path and the detrimental impact on their communities, they have chosen the path of peace and reconciliation. They now aspire to actively participate in the development of their communities and contribute to the healing process.
The former combatants urged their remaining comrades to heed the call for peace and embrace the path of reconciliation, emphasizing the immense suffering endured by the people.
Community elders and religious leaders extended a warm welcome to the trainees upon their arrival at the center, ENA reported. They conveyed their heartfelt blessings and encouraged the trainees to actively contribute to the establishment of lasting peace and stability within their respective communities upon their successful completion of the rehabilitation program.
It is noteworthy that the Amhara Regional Government has consistently extended invitations for peaceful dialogue and resolution of the conflict with the extremist group.
