Ethiopian Culture and History showcased in the Republic of Korea
Addis Ababa, December 6, 2024 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Embassy in the Republic of Korea and the Department of African Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies co-hosted a public lecture titled “Ethiopia Culture Day in DAS” on December 5, 2024.
According to the Ethiopian Embassy in Seoul, the event aimed to promote Ethiopia’s rich culture and history.
Dr. Eunji Choi, a lecturer in the Department of African Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, gave a presentation titled “What is Injera? Ethiopian Food Culture.” She explained that injera is more than just a staple food; it serves as a cultural and social symbol, fostering community bonds through celebrations, mutual support, and sharing.
She also emphasized the importance of the coffee ceremony, a central aspect of Ethiopian culture that brings people together to share news, discuss community issues, and strengthen relationships within families and villages. These traditions, Dr. Choi noted, illustrate Ethiopia’s deep-rooted values of community and social cohesion.
During the public lecture, the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and traditional clothing were showcased. Students also had the opportunity to experience authentic Ethiopian cuisine, coffee, and traditional clothing.
The event was a success, with attendees gaining a deeper understanding of Ethiopia’s rich culture and history. The public lecture served as a platform for promoting cultural exchange and understanding between Ethiopia and the Republic of Korea.
