Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom & Sudatel Telecom Group forge partnership for Horizon Fiber Initiative
Addis Ababa, December 3, 2024 (FBC) – Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel Telecom Group announced a landmark partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Horizon Fiber Initiative. This ambitious project aims to enhance digital connectivity throughout Africa by establishing efficient communication links between the Horn of Africa and regions in Europe and Asia.
The partnership signals a significant transformation in both international and regional digital infrastructure, focusing on the creation of a multi-terabit, redundant terrestrial fiber optic link. This new infrastructure is designed to provide faster, more reliable connectivity and is expected to play a crucial role in Africa’s digital transformation.
The Horizon Fiber Initiative has been under discussion since June 2024, highlighting collaborative efforts among a technical team with representatives from the three telecom operators. Having conducted an extensive feasibility study, the team addressed existing challenges and developed actionable recommendations for the project’s progression. The partners anticipate finalizing the contract by January 2024, with an aim to initiate services by April 2025.
By integrating the combined resources and technical expertise of Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel Telecom Group, the Horizon Fiber Initiative seeks to optimize data transmission through a streamlined network. The improvements in connectivity are expected to enhance communication capabilities for businesses and individuals alike, resulting in reduced latency and increased access to high-speed services.
In tackling some of the persistent challenges associated with submarine cables, particularly in the Red Sea, the Horizon Fiber initiative offers a fresh perspective on connectivity. Submarine cables have historically faced disruptions due to various issues, including environmental factors and potential sabotage, leading to costly repairs and service interruptions. However, the new terrestrial fiber network connecting Djibouti, Sudan, and Ethiopia presents a cost-effective, easily maintainable, and more resilient alternative.
As this initiative unfolds, it is poised to redefine regional and global telecommunications by delivering a robust, low-latency network that links Africa with major international markets. Such advancements will not only drive economic growth but also promote regional collaboration and innovation, enabling businesses to flourish within a digitally empowered landscape.
The leaders of the respective telecom companies have expressed their commitment to the project. Ethio Telecom’s representatives highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the Africa Digital Transformation Strategy 2030, emphasizing its potential impact on economic development across the continent. Djibouti Telecom’s Director General, Mohamed Assoweh Bouh, recognized the project as a major stride towards improved digital connectivity and regional unity. Meanwhile, Sudatel Telecom Group underlined Sudan’s strategic position and its commitment to enhancing connectivity throughout the region.
The Horizon Fiber Initiative embodies the dedication of these telecommunications leaders to bridge the digital divide, propelling Africa toward a more inclusive and connected future. Through enhanced connectivity, Africa is set to emerge as a prominent player in the global digital landscape.
