Addis Ababa to host ICAO 80th Anniversary Celebration & African Aviation Expo next week

Addis Ababa, December 2, 2024 (FBC) – The 80th anniversary of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the signing of the convention on international civil aviation & African Aviation Expo 2024 (AfriAEx2024) is set to take place next week at Sky Light Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme “ICAO80: Safe Skies, Sustainable Future”.

In a joint statement issued by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics and the Civil Aviation Authority regarding the upcoming event, it was stated that Ethiopia has been able to build the biggest airline brand in Africa owing its diligent engagement in the aviation sector for the past 80 years.

The statement recalled the establishment of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in December 1944, at a conference held in Chicago, USA, with the participation of 52 countries. Ethiopia was one of the three African countries participating, and the statement also noted that the country’s civil aviation authority is working with a vision to become the preferred and leading aviation hub in Africa by 2035.

Scheduled for 9 -12 December 2024, the commemorating of the 80th anniversary of the signing the Chicago Convention for the ICAO Eastern and Southern African (ESAF) Region and African Aviation Expo 2024 (AfriAEx2024) is expected to bringing together aviation manufacturers, airlines, global aviation associations, training institutes, government agencies, financial institutions, youth innovators, tour operators, and more across the globe and serves as unparalleled networking opportunities and knowledge exchange for aviation professionals.

The event is organized by the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority in collaboration with the IACO ESAF Region Office under the patronage of Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport & Logistics.

The event is set to include exhibitions, conferences, networking sessions, and technical tour.

Stating why the Ethiopian capital has been selected to host this grand event, ICAO underscored that Addis Ababa is Africa’s political and economic hub and home to various multilateral organizations as well as the third highest number of diplomatic missions in the world.

Addis Ababa is the leading conference and event tourism destination in/Africa, the Organization stated, while pointing out growing tourism and hospitality sectors with international-standard hotels like the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, Sheraton, and Radisson Blu.

The event aims to mark 80th anniversary of ICAO and the signing of the convention on international civil aviation at the African level and establish AfriAEx as a premier annual aviation event, as well as to promote innovation and sustainable, connect with key players, and to showcase latest technologies.
