Asayech Aychew, Biniam Mehari claim victory at the Great Ethiopian Run International

Addis Ababa, November 17, 2024 (FBC) – The 24th edition of the Great Ethiopian Run International 10-kilometer road race took place today in Addis Ababa, drawing over 50,000 participants.

In the women’s competition, Asayech Aychew crossed the finish line first, securing her victory, while Yenewa Nibret claimed the second spot. Biniam Mehari emerged triumphant in the men’s race, marking his second win at this prestigious event in Ethiopia.

Held under the theme “For Every Child, Nutrition,” this year’s race attracted a host of distinguished athletes from around the globe. Dignitaries including President Taye Atske Selassie, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie, Tourism Minister Selamawit Kasa, and Health Minister Mekades Daba were in attendance for the event’s opening.

Celebrated as one of the world’s premier 10km road races, the Great Ethiopian Run has inspired numerous Ethiopian athletes to achieve greatness in their sporting careers. Haile Gebrselassie, the founder of this acclaimed event, noted its significance as a launchpad for aspiring athletes.

In addition to advancing athletics, the Great Ethiopian Run plays a crucial role in enhancing Ethiopia’s global image and promoting tourism, attracting both domestic and international participants as well as members of the diplomatic community.

This year’s race commemorated the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Lucy, one of the oldest hominid fossils, discovered in Ethiopia half a century ago. As a tribute, 50,000 individuals participated in the 10km race, which was organized in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Tourism.

The event has become a hallmark of Addis Ababa, which continues to evolve with extensive development initiatives shaping its landscape. Initiated by legendary long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie in 2000, the Great Ethiopian Run remains a vibrant celebration of athletics and community spirit.
