24th Great Ethiopian Run International set for Sunday
Addis Ababa, November 15, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Tourism has announced that the Sofi Malt Great Ethiopian Run International is poised to enhance the nation’s image and boost its tourism appeal. This year, the iconic 10km race will take place for the 24th time under the theme “For Every Child, Nutrition,” in Addis Ababa this Sunday.
During a press conference today, Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa emphasized the event’s significant role in bolstering tourism and development efforts in the capital. She noted that this year’s run coincides with the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Lucy, with an anticipated 50,000 participants expected to join in the festivities.
This event is not only a showcase of global athletic talent, but it also aims to elevate Ethiopia’s tourism profile on the international stage. Haile Gebrselassie, the founder of the Great Run, praised it as one of the world’s most esteemed races, encouraging local residents to extend their hospitality to international runners and to prioritize safety while participating.
The Sofi Malt Great Ethiopian Run International 10km is designed to provide a unique experience for runners of all ability levels. While it draws elite athletes, its main goal is to promote mass participation amongst local residents. The race ranks among the world’s top 10km road events, attracting participants from around the globe and fostering a spirit of unity in diversity as runners come together to celebrate.
