Field Marshal Birhanu Jula commends China’s support for Ethiopia’s de-mining efforts
Addis Ababa, November 12, 2024 (FBC) – In a significant step towards enhancing safety and fostering socio-economic development, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, Chief of General Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, and Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai have signed a handover certificate for China’s de-mining assistance to Ethiopia.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Chen highlighted that the initiative aligns with President Xi Jinping’s commitment announced at the FOCAC Beijing Summit under the “Action for a Mine-free Africa” program. This assistance will bolster Ethiopia’s de-mining capacity, support minefield surveys, and promote mine risk education, reflecting China’s dedication to the safety and well-being of the Ethiopian people and the strength of the all-weather strategic partnership between the two nations.
Field Marshal Birhanu expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing its role in enhancing Ethiopia’s de-mining capabilities and ultimately promoting the safety and economic progress of the country. He also noted the Ethiopian National Defense Forces’ readiness to strengthen bilateral cooperation through tangible actions. The event was attended by Ambassador Negus Kebede, Director-General of Middle East and Asia-Pacific Affairs Directorate at the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
