Ministry of Justice unveils Land Justice Guideline

Addis Ababa, October 29, 2024 (FBC) – The Ministry of Justice (MoJ), in collaboration with the Hague Innovation Law Institute (HiiL), has unveiled the Land Justice Guideline, a comprehensive framework designed to address land-related conflicts in Ethiopia.

This milestone event was marked by a ceremony attended by senior government officials, experts involved in the document’s creation, representatives from HiiL, various stakeholders, and invited guests.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ermias Yemane-Birhan, Minister of State for Institutional Capacity Building and Reform at the Ministry of Justice, emphasized that the Land Justice Guideline encompasses practices and experiences beneficial for policy development and justice delivery in the sector, including procedures that can be readily implemented.

He highlighted the guideline’s aim to make Ethiopia’s land justice system fair, sustainable, and accessible to all by incorporating practices from both traditional and formal conflict resolution methods.

Samuel Muller, Chief Executive Officer of The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL), underscored the document’s value as a resource for actors involved in land justice administration to effectively resolve land disputes.

He pointed out that the Land Justice Guideline contains procedures and experiences that can be helpful for policy and justice delivery in the sector and includes practices that can be implemented.

According to the Ministry, the unveiling of the Land Justice Guideline marks a significant step towards enhancing land justice in Ethiopia, fostering a more equitable and sustainable approach to conflict resolution in the sector.
