Russia and Ethiopia discuss the country’s participation in the BRICS Summit in Kazan

Addis Ababa, October 11, 2024 (FBC) – Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, and Genet Teshome Jirru, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Russia, met in Moscow.

They discussed the practical arrangements for participation by the Ethiopian delegation in the BRICS Summit in Kazan on 22–24 October 2024, as well as development of business ties and expansion of cultural and economic cooperation between the two countries.

“The partnership between our countries is based on friendship, mutual respect and trust, bringing benefits to both. We appreciate Ethiopia’s balanced stance on sensitive issues. In many ways, our countries share the same views on international cooperation, from the need to build an equal partnership and respect for human rights to the idea of shaping a multipolar world,” Anton Kobyakov , Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation, Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee for Russia’s BRICS 2024 Chairship in 2024.

The parties concluded that, in today’s world, with its global challenges demanding joint efforts, cooperation within international associations is becoming increasingly important and consequential. Collaboration within BRICS is moving to a new level and will continue at the BRICS Summit in Kazan.

“The ties between Ethiopia and Russia have a long and rich history, and we feel secure about the future of our cooperation. We will keep expanding cooperation within the framework of international associations such as BRICS and will be happy to participate in events highlighting our mutual interest and helping us resolve global challenges.”

“I am confident that joint efforts, including events organized by the Roscongress Foundation, will bring marked results and strengthen our relations for many years to come,” Genet Teshome Jirru , Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Russia.

Both parties believe that the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum organized by the Roscongress Foundation could be a key venue for strengthening trade and investment ties between Russia and Ethiopia. In 2025, SPIEF is scheduled for 18–21 June. The African agenda will, by tradition, be the Forum’s focal point. The Russia-Africa Business Dialogue, a meeting place for Russian and African businesses and government officials since 2016, will be part of the Forum.

Another highlight of the discussion was the First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum to be held on 9–10 November 2024, which should continue the consultations at the 2023 Russia–Africa Summit in St. Petersburg.

The conference will include roundtables and panel discussions on the most pressing aspects of Russia–Africa cooperation. It will also feature a separate theme track discussing the humanitarian cooperation between Russia and its African partners, according to BRICS Summit 2024 portal.
