Ethiopia condemns the attack on residence of UAE ambassador in Khartoum

Addis Ababa, October 1, 2024 (FBC) – The government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has condemned in the strongest terms the recent attack on the residence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador in Khartoum, the Republic of the Sudan.

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations unequivocally stipulates the obligation of all states to protect the premises of diplomatic missions from intrusion, damage or harm, and to ensure the security of diplomatic personnel at all times, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has pointed out in a statement.

Through the statement, the government of Ethiopia has also renewed its call to all parties in the Sudan to fully respect international diplomatic norms and to refrain from actions that endanger diplomatic personnel or facilities.

Several media outlets report that the United Arab Emirates said early on Monday the residence of its ambassador in Khartoum was attacked by a military aircraft, condemning it as a “heinous attack.”

The UAE’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the attack on its ambassador’s residence had caused extensive damage to the building.

War erupted in April last year between the Sudanese army and the RSF over a transition to free elections. The U.N. says nearly 25 million people – half Sudan’s population – need aid, famine is looming and some 8 million people have fled their homes.
