HoA countries must reclaim lost opportunities for shared growth: FM Taye

Addis Ababa, August 30, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie, emphasized that the people of the Horn of Africa, united by strong friendships and community ties, are no longer bound by past hostilities.

He advocated for peaceful resolution of differences to reclaim lost opportunities for shared growth, warning against attempts to drive a wedge between communities across borders.

In a media briefing focused on Ethiopia’s foreign relations and regional issues today, he highlighted Ethiopia’s foreign policy aimed at strengthening ties with neighboring nations and fostering global partnerships. He stressed that Ethiopia cannot remain silent as the peace and harmony of its neighbours are turned into a playground for terrorists and anti-peace elements.

Ambassador Taye also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to peace, citing the ongoing implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement and the government’s dedication to resolving conflicts in the Amhara and Oromia regions peacefully.

Discussing the Ankara-led talks with Somalia, he noted progress expecting to yield results but cautioned that provocative comments from certain individuals and hostile forces could undermine these efforts. He described collaboration with hostile forces as shortsighted and counterproductive.

Additionally, he addressed the situation in Sudan, reiterating Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting the Sudanese people in their quest for peace. He praised those working to restore stability in the country, noting the importance of consolidating progress made in various initiatives. He stressed that lasting peace must be driven by the Sudanese themselves.

In his concluding remarks, he expressed Ethiopia’s support for South Sudan in implementing the revitalized peace agreement and responded to media inquiries.
